Council's website says the leak will be fixed but no one is certain when or how it will happen, writes Candice Reed
The leaky Civic carpark roof in Aotea Square will keep leaking, with many spaces off-limits, until further notice.
Auckland City Council suspended plans to redesign the city square in 2004 when it identified the damage caused by a leaking roof.
Immediate safety measures were implemented, but no repair work has begun.
The council looked at a $73 million project to repair both the carpark roof and redevelop Aotea Square but, three years on, plans still haven't been decided or even gone to tender.
The council says the delay comes down to deciding on a joint initiative for the square and carpark, or individual projects, and the logistics involved. If an individual project to repair just the carpark was decided on, the council hopes it would cost about $50 million.
The council declined to comment, claiming there wasn't an ``official announcement'' to be made, but details on its website relating to the central business district's future say ``a concept plan for the square and Aotea Centre interface is expected to be ready by mid 2007''.
It adds: ``Auckland City Council anticipates that the construction period for this project will be from November 2008 to September 2010.''
The council says it is ``committed to working with the relevant stakeholders to help mitigate any issues'' and is exploring options to combat the loss of carparks during construction - including $10 million for temporary carparking if it is required.
