Lord's result haunts Black Caps
English media react to first test win over Black Caps
1) Was Lords the most disappointing result in our test cricket history?
Yes. Everything was set up to roll on from the World Cup hype and over England. Heck, we were probably even favourites. They need to make amends at Leeds - suddenly, there is an awful lot to lose.
2) Is Ben Stokes the new Ian Botham?
Yes, it certainly looks that way. Or did Mike Hesson and co. find a chink in his armour.
3) Is Mark Craig the new Daniel Vettori?
No, it doesn't look that way. New Zealand missed the combative attitude of Neil Wagner at Lords, but they need to promote a spinner and Craig is it for now.
4) Will the English commentators leave Ian Smith alone?
Every now and then, they've been unable to control their mirth about his girth. Smithy has taken it well, on the surface, but we'd all like to see a little less of him, for his own sake.
5) Will Tim Southee ever get rid of his batting gremlins?
Unlikely, it seems. It's seven years since his wildly successful start as a test batsman against England, and he still hasn't got the swashbuckling heroics out of the system. He has so much potential, but got out to another inappropriate shot.
6) Should we care about the world ranking system, which is poised to send us plummeting from dizzy heights towards the basement?
Only if we have to. It's a murky business anyway. What really matters are the unfolding stories, the twists and turns, in a series. The Kiwis stuffed up at Lords, but now we get to see how they respond.
