A US military CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter used by the Marine Corps for transporting troops was missing and presumed to have crashed in Iraq today, the Pentagon said.
The twin-engine helicopter, which usually carries a crew of four, was missing near Kerbala, about 110km southwest of Baghdad.
The Defence Department did not know how many people were on board.
