Popeye the Sailor Man has turned 75, still smoking his pipe and flexing his spinach-fuelled biceps with waif-ish girlfriend Olive Oyl at his side.
Popeye's debut came on January 17, 1929, in a guest spot in the Thimble Theatre, a comic strip created by Elzie Segar for the New York EveningJournal, which revolved around Olive Oyl's family.
The Empire State Building in New York was shining green lights in honour of the spinach-lover at the weekend.
