Wainuiomata families are being warned to lock their doors and windows at night, to protect themselves from a man who has been sneaking into children's bedrooms.
The man has struck four times in the past seven days, but was yesterday stopped by an angry uncle and ran away, Detective Sergeant Murray Porter of Lower Hutt said.
Thirteen detectives have been called in to find the man, who first came to light when he tried to assault a young woman in the town centre on Friday night.
The man, described as a slim, light-skinned Polynesian or Maori with lank, ear-length dark hair, grabbed the woman in an alleyway. She swore and threw a hamburger at him, and he ran away, Mr Porter said.
