A man out walking his dog after a few too many drinks was hit by a car - and fined on the spot.
Police say the 36-year-old is lucky to be alive after stepping out on to a road in West Beach about 3am (local time).
He received head and shoulder injuries and was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital. His dog was also hurt but should make a full recovery, officers said.
A breath test revealed the man had a blood-alcohol level of 0.287 - more than five times the legal limit for driving.
He was given an on-the-spot fine for moving into the path of a vehicle.
