The Apache experienced an engine p' />

A bit of Kiwi ingenuity has come to the aid of a disabled US Army helicopter in Afghanistan's Bamyan province.

The Apache experienced an engine problem and was stuck in an exposed position on Bamyan airfield.

It was decided to tow it to the safety of the Kiwi Base.

The New Zealand workshop team first manufactured a tow bar for one of their LAVs.

Then, using sheets of plywood to prevent the eight tonne helicopter toppling sideways, the crew towed it around a corner, across a ditch and up a hill to Kiwi base.

US maintenance Crew Chief, Sergeant Judy Beltowski, says she's never seen that level of craftsmanship from a maintenance team anywhere.
