UNITED NATIONS (AP) UNITED NATIONS (AP) The U.N. agency promoting equality for women has launched a database of provisions in constitutions of the world that are relevant to women's rights and gender equality.
UN Women said Friday it expects the database to be used by activists and experts on gender equality and human rights to examine the principles and rules which guarantee, deny, or protect the rights of women and girls around the world.
The agency said the database is the first focusing on constitutional provisions affecting women and covers 195 countries, including all U.N. member states and observers.
It is organized regionally into Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania and the constitutional provisions are available in English translation as well as in their original language, with a total of 62 languages.
