British grandparents could be paid for babysitting their grandchildren under plans being drawn up by ministers to get more single mothers back to work, it was reported yesterday.
Under the scheme, lone parents moving off state benefits and into jobs would be given an allowance to cover childcare services offeredby a relative, typically a grandparent.
The move is in response to frustration at the lack of affordable child care, especially in deprived areas, where efforts to get lone parents back to work are hampered by the lack of child care spaces.
