A mother and daughter have died in a sauna after the door handle came off and trapped them inside for 90 minutes.

The two women, aged 65 and 45, were at their friend's house when the relaxing spa turned into tragedy in the town of Jicin, northeast of Prague in the Czech Republic, according to Daily Mail.

When the owner of the sauna got suspicious of the length of time her guests had spent in the sauna, she went to check on them, only to discover they were lying dead on the floor.

Local police spokeswoman Iva Kormosova said: "The mother and daughter aged 65 and 45 were taking a sauna at their friends' place in a garden colony.

"The owner thought they were taking too long to come out so she went to check and found them lying on the floor."

The emergency were called but they declared the women dead at the scene.

The women had tried and failed to break the window of the door in order to try and escape the extreme heat.

Post-mortem examinations are due to be held.
