A mob of 2000 people hacked and burned to death eight suspected robbers in a remote hamlet in Guatemala's northern Peten district, police said yesterday.
Villagers captured and killed the eight on Monday after a botched attempt by an armed gang to rob a grain truck in the area, about 161km north of Guatemala City.
Mob justice is commonplace in isolated Maya Indian areas of Guatemala. Guatemala's vast Peten district where the attack took place - a lowland plain bordering Mexico and Belize - draws hordes of foreign tourists annually to its Mayan jungle ruins. Last week, unidentified assailants hacked to death an American woman in a hotel near the Mayan ruins of Tikal.
