A Frenchwoman has died while trying to break the world record in freediving.
Audrey Mestre, attached to a pulley and weighted sled, sunk below the surface without oxygen and was pulled up by divers nine minutes later.
It was not clear whether she reached her target depth of 171m at
the beach near La Romana, about 130km east of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
Mestre was trying to break the world record of 162m set by her husband Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras, of Cuba, who was in La Romana.
