William Scholl, who made foot care fashionable during the 1960s and 1970s with a contoured wooden sandal designed to exercise the muscles, has died at 81.
Scholl, a dual citizen of the United States and Britain, died of pneumonia on the Isle of Man, an island off the northwest coast ofEngland.
His exercise sandal - known as Dr Scholl's, the name of his family's foot care company - has been worn by millions of people worldwide.
An orthopaedic specialist, Scholl came across a simple wooden sandal on a trip to Germany in the late 1950s. Bringing the design back first to Britain before taking it to the United States, he improved the design, added a leather strap across the toes and sold it with the slogan, "Looking good and doing you good".
The clog - still being produced and sold - was designed to exercise the feet and legs, toning muscles and ostensibly preventing podiatric ailments.
