'Fat tax' suggested in Australia

Hamburgers and soft drinks could be hit with a "fat tax" to combat obesity.

Australian Medical Association vice-president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said the tax was one of several fat-fighting proposals that would be put to a meeting of health ministers next month.

More than 54 per cent of Australians are overweight or obese, which can lead to problems such as diabetes.

Under the proposal, foods high in fat or sugar would attract an extra tax on top of the GST.
