Driver's lucky escape as train collides with car at Melbourne level crossing

A Melbourne electrician has escaped death by just seconds after his van became stuck on train tracks in the city's west.

The driver found himself stuck between the boom gates at a level crossing in Spotswood on Wednesday morning when his van stalled.

CCTV footage obtained by 7 News showed the van unable to move as the lights flashed and the boom gates came down.

The man then gets out of his van and looks up and down the tracks before running off out of the shot.

Two seconds later a Metro train ploughed into his van, dragging it metres down the track.

The van came off second best, with significant damage to the driver's side, and had to be towed away.

Witnesses said the man was trying to start the ignition after becoming stuck but couldn't get the van going.

The Department of Transport said the incident occurred at the Hudson Rd level crossing just after 7am.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman said two crews responded to make the scene as safe as possible.

"The car was towed away and the train was able to be moved to the nearby station where passengers were allowed to exit to the platform," he said.

No one was injured from the collision.

Williamstown and Werribee lines train services between Footscray and Newport stations were suspended for about 90 minutes while emergency services responded.
