Australian poll buzz rises

A Cabinet minister said yesterday that he has booked advertising space in his electorate throughout July and early August, heightening speculation that an August election is likely.

No date has been announced for the federal election, which must be held by early next year.

Prime Minister John Howard's conservative coalition is seeking a fourth straight term.

Children and Youth Affairs Minister Larry Anthony said he had booked the advertising spaces but only Howard knew when the election would be.
