Aceh martial law to be extended

The Indonesian Government is expected to announce today an extension of martial law in Aceh.

That was not supposed to be the scenario when 45,000 military and police began a six-month offensive in May against about 5000 Free Aceh Movement (GAM) fighters.

Officially the military has killed more than 1000 rebels and captured nearly 900, while security forces have suffered fewer than 100 dead.
