Tim's going contract milking on his family's 200-cow farm at Lepperton next season.
"I'll use to the prize money to help buy gear I need, like calf rearing equipment," he says.
About 300 people gathered at the TSB Hub to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the awards in Taranaki. First-time entrant Shaun Neal was named Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year.
"The win was a huge surprise and quite overwhelming. There was a strong line-up of finalists and I had no idea how I'd go," says the 23-year-old.
Shaun won half of the eight merit awards in his category, collecting $10,657 in prizes.
"I entered to push myself out of my comfort zone and gain feedback from experienced farmers and industry professionals," he says.
Shaun currently manages a 325-cow farm for Simon and Gillian O'Connell at Auroa. He's stepping up to a 320-cow contract milking position in June.
"I've put together a plan for next season, which includes staff management and detailed budgets to help me achieve my goals," he says.
Sam Hughson placed second in the category and 50:50 sharemilkers Dion and Jo Bishell were named Taranaki Share Farmers of the Year.
"It's been tough out there for the last few years, but we've made it through to the other side," Jo said. Entering the awards has enabled the Bishells, who milk 470 cows, to push the boundaries of their business.
"Experts have critiqued us and our processes, which will help us secure future opportunities," say the couple.
They won $17,346 in prizes. Kapuni contract milker Matt Gugi was runner-up.
A field day featuring the winners will be held at the Bishell's farm on 123 Kearin Road, Manaia, on Thursday, March 16.
