Four teams from Hāwera High School recently competed in the Central North Island Debating Championships in Wanganui.

The mixed junior team - Matthew Finer, Rebecca Smythe and Ebony Kalin - was the runner up in the junior section, with Ebony named the best junior speaker.

Both senior teams won three of their five debates, and the Year 11 team - Jordan Dawson, Emmanuel Araba and Caleb Finer - showed the benefit of attending the year before.

The Senior B team - Tayla Steele, Jacob Kennedy and Shruti Reddy / Abraham Napitupulu - used a different combination on each day, with Shruti and Abraham competing on alternate days.

This team grew in leaps and bounds over the course of the weekend.

On day 2, Shruti jumped into Wanganui High School's third team as a favour, and ended up with bragging rights over the Year 11 team.

It was the most successful championship that Hāwera High School has attended in a while.
