World karting champ Wade Cunningham earned a season-best second place in an incident-marred first Formula Ford Zetec 2000 race at the third round of the US championship in Monterey, California, yesterday.
It was the best single-seater car race result so far for the 19-year-old Aucklander, though he was far from happywith how the 25-minute race panned out - particularly after twice setting the fastest qualifying time.
"I was robbed," he said afterwards.
"My mechanic warned me over the radio that they said I accelerated too early on the first pace lap and that they wanted us to maintain a constant speed until the light changed.
"So I did, but on the second pace lap Ian [Lacy, the eventual winner] just planted it coming out of the first corner and the race went green."
