Snooker: Welshman crowned world champion

Welshman Mark Williams was crowned world snooker champion for the second time in Sheffield today, beating Ken Doherty, of Ireland, 18 frames to 16 in a thrilling final.

The 28-year-old becomes only the third player after Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry to complete the triple crown of Masters, British championship and world championship in a season.

He is also the first player since compatriot Ray Reardon in 1982-83 to regain the world No 1 slot.

Williams, winner of the 2000 championship, collected a cheque for £270,000 ($775,000).
