CAPE TOWN - The Sharks finished bottom of the Super 12 table after drawing 20-20 with the Cats in an all-South African clash in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
It was the second time in the 10-year history of the tournament that the Sharks had ended the season by propping up the rest. They were also last in 2000.
The Cats finished one place off the bottom in 11th. It was the sixth time since 1998 that they had occupied one of the last two positions in the standings.
The home team led the Sharks 10-7 at the break thanks to tries from wing Jorrie Muller and flanker Hendro Scholtz. Flanker Solly Tyibilika replied for the visitors with a touchdown.
Wing Cedric Mkhize added two second-half tries for the Sharks but first five-eighths Brent Russell missed both conversions.
Juan Smith dived over for the Cats.
