Lock Selborne Boome has replaced the suspended Corne Krige as captain of the Stormers for their Super 12 rugby match against the Crusaders at Jade Stadium on Saturday night.
The 29-year-old takes the skipper's armband off Krige, who was handed an eight-week ban by the New Zealand Rugby Union judicial panelfor headbutting Chiefs centre Derek Maisey last week.
The suspension has ended Krige's Super 12 career. He had earlier confirmed he would be quitting South African rugby at the end of the competition.
Stormers coach Gert Smal said Boome, who made his Stormers debut in 1998, was a fitting replacement for Krige.
"I think he's very composed and leads by example.
"Also, basically because of his experience, he has good leadership skills.
"He's one of the Springboks that players have a lot of respect for," he said.
Boome, who has 20 Springbok caps, was troubled by a knee injury mid-way through the Stormers Super 12 campaign but Smal said it was "now not a concern".
The 1.98m lock tore cartilage in his right knee and had four weeks off before returning last week in the 14-29 loss to the Chiefs.
He was a member of the successful 1999 campaign when the Stormers reached the Super 12 semifinals. Krige will remain with the team until the end of their Super 12 campaign.
"Obviously he can't train with us but he will still be there."
Meanwhile, Krige has said on the Stormers' website that the ban was obviously not how he wanted to end his playing days with the team.
"In the heat of battle things happen from time to time. I feel like I have let the team and supporters down and regret the incident."
Krige believed the team had the talent and spirit to succeed this season without him.
The Stormers are in third place on the points table, two behind the second placed Crusaders.
