Scouting Report
If the Dragons were ever going to win the title then last year was the year. And they didn't get close.
This year, with Trent Barrett, Luke Bailey, Shaun Timmins and Aaron Gorell among the departed, the Dragons were pinning their hopes on centre Mark Gasnier making a successful switch to five-eight. But with a torn pectoral muscle making Gasnier about as likely as his uncle Reg to make a significant contribution to the Dragons' cause this season, it's hard to see where the inspiration might come from. In between his usual outbursts of self-congratulation after his last boxing win, Anthony 'The Man' Mundine did say: "I might even come back and play six for St George".
Well, there is a vacancy.
Coach Nathan Brown will almost certainly say
"We've certainly had our fair share of adversity this season but the boys never stopped trying."
Brown probably won't say
"I think Anthony will be a terrific player-coach for St George."
Reasons to be cheerful
At least they won't be burdened with the over-expectation that typically accompanies a St George campaign.
Reasons to be fearful
Match-winner Gasnier is pretty much out for the season with a broken heart/pectoral muscle. If he does come back for the play-offs, it will probably be as a commentator as the Dragons won't be in them.
Prediction
10th. You'll never win anything with kids. Just ask Sir Alex Ferguson.
