Panthers win 5-1 to end Islanders points streak at 10

NEW YORK (AP) " Florida emphatically ended the New York Islanders' run of 10 games without a loss in regulation time by beating the hosts 5-1 on Tuesday, dropping the Islanders down to third in the NHL Metropolitan Division.

The Islanders slipped below the crosstown New York Rangers, who ended Edmonton's six-game winning streak.

Elsewhere, Dallas maintained its eight-point lead in the Central by comfortably beating lowly Columbus, while San Jose returned to winning ways after six straight defeats and beat Atlantic leader Montreal.

Florida's Reilly Smith, Aleksander Barkov and Aaron Ekblad all scored in the second period before Vincent Trochek and Jonathan Huberdeau added goals in the third.

Brock Nelson netted the sole goal for the Islanders, who had won their previous five home games.

San Jose belatedly won its first game in December by taking a 3-1 victory at Montreal.

Joe Pavelski scored once and added an assist while Patrick Marleau and Dainius Zubrus also scored for the Sharks, who have a 12-0 record when leading after two periods.

Dale Weise had the goal for Montreal.

Dallas' Tyler Seguin broke open a tight game with two second-period goals 30 seconds apart to set up a 5-1 win against Columbus.

Defensemen Johnny Oduya and Alex Goligoski each scored to give the Stars one-goal leads in the first and second, and rookie Mattias Janmark also netted for the Stars.

Scott Hartnell scored on the power play for Columbus early in the second before Goligoski's goal gave the Stars a lead they never relinquished.

The Rangers won 4-2 at home against Edmonton, with Rick Nash and Mats Zuccarello each contributing a goal and an assist.

Dylan McIlrath scored his first NHL goal and Jesper Fast added an empty-netter in the final seconds to help the Rangers arrest a three-game slide.

Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle scored for the Oilers.

St. Louis fought back from a two-goal deficit to win 4-3 at Winnipeg, with Paul Stastny scoring the tiebreaking goal with 3:38 left.

After Jets forward Mark Scheifele hit the post with a shot, the Blues moved the puck the other way and the puck came to Stastny, whose shot also hit a post but went it.

Alexander Steen and Tarasenko each scored on the power play, and Troy Brouwer also had a goal for St. Louis.

The loss halted a three-game home winning streak for the Jets, who got goals from Scheifele, Chris Thorburn and Drew Stafford.

Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 shots for his first shutout of the season, leading the Avalanche to a 3-0 victory over Chicago.

Matt Duchene had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who capped a perfect road trip to Nashville, St. Louis and Chicago. Zach Redmond scored in the second period and Gabriel Landeskog added an empty-netter with 1:57 left.

Varlamov's efforts ended Patrick Kane's franchise-record 26-game points streak, which was the longest in the NHL since Mats Sundin's 30-game stretch in 1992-93. Kane had 16 goals and 24 assists during the run, and has points in all but three of the Blackhawks' 32 games.

Minnesota romped to a 6-2 win against road-weary Vancouver, with Thomas Vanek scoring one of the Wild's three power-play goals and adding three assists.

A revived Calgary extended its winning streak to six games when Kris Russell scored 1:23 into overtime to give the Flames a 2-1 victory over Nashville.

New Jersey goalie Cory Schneider made 25 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and help the Devils beat Buffalo 2-0.
