NEUCHATEL, Switzerland (AP) U.S. Open semifinalist Stanislas Wawrinka helped put Switzerland in control of its Davis Cup World Group playoff against Ecuador on Friday as the hosts took a 2-0 lead after the opening singles.
The 10th-ranked Wawrinka eased past No. 340 Emilio Gomez 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in his return to action six days after losing to Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows.
Later, 164th-ranked Swiss Marco Chiudinelli beat No. 295 Julio-Cesar Campozano 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7) on the indoor hard court surface.
Wawrinka and Chiudinelli will team up in Saturday's doubles against Gonzalo Escobar and Roberto Quiroz.
Swiss No. 1 Roger Federer is skipping the Davis Cup this year.
