While many people were celebrating New Year's Eve with a glass in their hand, Tauranga's Tim Taylor put his back into it and crossed Cook Strait.
The 24-year-old kayaker then voyaged to the Kaikoura coast after a tough few days paddling in gusty conditions.
Mr Taylor left Waimarino Adventure Park on November 27 on a mission to be the first person to complete a solo circumnavigation of New Zealand by sea kayak.
