Canterbury are without lock James Broadhurst for the Air NZ Cup rugby semifinal against Hawke's Bay in Christchurch on Friday night.
Broadhurst will miss the match due to a shoulder injury and his place has been filled by Samuel Whitelock in the team named today by coach Rob Penney.
Coming off a 3-9 Ranfurly Shield loss to Southland last week, Penney has tinkered with his backline, naming Casey Laulala to start at centre, which means Tim Bateman has moved in one spot to second five-eighth and Ryan Crotty is named on the reserves bench.
Canterbury
Colin Slade, Sean Maitland, Casey Laulala, Tim Bateman, Tu Umaga-Marshall, Stephen Brett, Tyson Keats, Nasi Manu, George Whitelock (captain), Michael Paterson, Samuel Whitelock, Isaac Ross, Peter Borlase, Ti'i Paulo, Andrew Olorenshaw.
Reserves: Steve Fualau, Rodney Ah You, Ash Parker, Matt Todd, Willi Heinz, Ryan Crotty, James Paterson.
