Openers Jamie How and Aaron Redmond combined for 55 runs to get New Zealand off to a good start in its chase of a 317-run victory target set by Bangladesh on the fourth day of the first cricket test Monday.
Redmond was not out on 27 and Jesse Ryder had an unbeaten 15 at tea with New Zealand on 84 for 1 wicket after earlier dismissing Bangladesh for 242 in its second innings.
How and Redmond's opening partnership came to an end when Abdur Razzak bowled out How for 36.
Resuming on an overnight total of 184-8 Bangladesh tailenders Mashrafee bin Murtaza and Abdur Razzak ended their 40-run, ninth wicket partnership when Ross Taylor took a catch at slip off Iain O'Brien to remove Razzak for 18.
Bouyed by left-arm spinner Shakib al Hasan's 71-run innings after a record-making seven wicket haul, Bangladesh's tailenders adding 58 runs in the last 23 overs.
Murtaza and Shahadat Hossain added 22, before Brendon McCullum stumped Murtaza (44) off Aaron Redmond. His 44 came of 87 balls with seven boundaries.
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori got four wickets for 74 runs, Jeetan Patel and Iain O'Brien took two apiece, while Kyle Mills and Aaron Redmond had one each.
Jamie How was 6 not out and Aaron Redmond was yet to score at the break after New Zealand began its second innings shortly before lunch.
Hasan took seven wickets for 36 runs to help dismiss New Zealand for 171, and then scored his half century to give Bangladesh a 258-run lead at the end of the third day.
Hasan's 7-36 haul in 25.5 overs was Bangladesh's best bowling figures in a test innings, overhauling Enamul Haque's 7-95 against Zimbabwe in 2005 at Chittagong.
Bangladesh has never won a test against New Zealand, losing five of their six previous matches by an innings. New Zealand won the preceding limited-overs series 2-1.
