Motocross: Coppins hangs on to British crown

Josh Coppins pocketed the British motocross crown for the second straight year in style, winning both heats in the final round at the weekend.

The world MX1 No 2 from Motueka arrived at the Matchams Park circuit in England with a three-point lead over British rival Paul Cooper, who kept the battle alive by finishing second in the first heat behind Coppins.

Coppins looked set to clinch the title until a third lap fumble almost proved costly. But he blasted to victory with a lead of more than 40s at the finish.

Hastings rider Mary Perkins has claimed a world record for the longest motorcycle ramp jump by a female. Perkins, on a Yamaha YZ250cc, soared 48.58m at the Bindoon Bike Drag Park in Western Australia.
