KEY POINTS:
English World Cup rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson's appalling injury woes continued today when he was ruled out for at least a month with kidney damage.
Wilkinson suffered the injury playing for Newcastle during last Friday's 26-21 Premiership win over Bristol, a match in which he played the full 80 minutes.
Newcastle issued a statement on Wednesday saying that Wilkinson complained of pain in the area, with medical examinations showing damage to the kidney.
No operation is required but Wilkinson has been advised to rest for a month before resuming any form of training.
Falcons director of rugby John Fletcher said: "We are all desperately disappointed for Jonny.
"He came back and showed fantastic form last Friday. It's a big blow for the team, especially with Toby Flood being away on international duty, but more importantly than that it's a big blow for Jonny himself.
"He has shown in the past what resilience he has in the face of injury and I'm sure we will see the same amazing strength of character this time round."
First five Wilkinson has not played for England since kicking the last-minute drop goal that won the 2003 World Cup final.
He has suffered a long and varied series of injuries, including a shoulder nerve problem, bicep, appendicitis, groin and, earlier this season, knee ligaments.
