The departure of Steven Taylor leaves the Wellington Phoenix on the lookout for a new centre back to boost their defensive stocks. With international travel impossible, the focus turns to those already playing in this part of the world.
So who could make the step up to professionalfootball? Jason Pine looks at five possible candidates.
Brian Kaltak (Auckland City)

The Vanuatu captain has long been regarded as the best defender in the National League, combining pace, intelligence, passing range and physicality. He'd take up an import spot, but with three available, that's no real issue. Well worth a punt.
Spent the last two years at the Phoenix and was contracted for the coming season, before being released by mutual consent in June. Had limited opportunities while he was there, but always looked at home when called upon and would slot easily back into the playing squad. They've probably even still got his playing strip.
Sam Brotherton (Auckland City)

The 24-year-old Aucklander has the ability to play professionally, having done so for two years at North Carolina FC after a stint in the Sunderland reserves. With 12 All Whites caps, most recently in 2018, a move to the Phoenix could kick-start his career for both club and country.

The 24-year-old has been one of the best amateur centre backs in the country for a few seasons, anchoring the Team Wellington rearguard during a period of sustained success. Combines leadership and composure and would thrive in a professional environment.
Scott Hilliar (Avondale FC, Australia)

Following five seasons in New Zealand's National League, the 27-year-old Waikato product has earned rave reviews during his two years in the competitive Victorian State League. Would bring reliability and versatility, with an ability to play at fullback if required.
