Sarah Ulmer won the individual pursuit title by over 10 seconds from Otago's Dale Tye at the national track cycling championships last night.
Having set a national record time of 3mins 38.939secs two days ago in the heats, Ulmer says the final did not go exactly to plan as she tried some experiments with different gears to clock 3:42.711.
She says it did not really pay off but is glad she had the chance to experiment.
However, Ulmer will not be drawn on what may happen later in the year with the Athens Olympics as she is just enjoying things at the moment and trying to ride faster.
She says she is encouraged by the times she is riding early in the year, and cannot wait to soon begin international competition.
Ulmer says being in New Zealand you can almost got unnoticed as the rest of the world either does not know or does not care what she is doing.
She says some may be analysing her performances but it does not really concern her.
Meanwhile, in the 4000m men's individual pursuit Auckland's Richard Bowker beat Canterbury's Hayden Godfrey in the gold medal race in a time of 4mins 51.036secs.
Otago's Katri Lake won the women's Keirin.
