England have made the big call to leave veteran fast bowler Jimmy Anderson out of the first Test in Brisbane.
A day after England captain Joe Root refused to unveil his team for the opening clash with Australia at the Gabba, reports emerged that Anderson, 39, would not play because of a calf injury.
However, England later said Anderson's absence was not injury-related, but instead was planned with a view towards keeping him fresh for the pink ball Test in Adelaide.
"Jimmy is fit to play, and is not carrying an injury. With five Tests in six weeks the plan was to get him ready for the second Test in Adelaide," the England camp said.
Chris Woakes is expected to take the place of Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, who is on his final tour of Australia.
