No such luck for time trial trio
Villumesen's teammates weren't quite so successful in the time trial, but they were close. None more so than Jaime Nielsen, who is unfortunate to come home in fourth, missing the bronze medal by a mere two seconds. Fellow Kiwi Reta Trotman was 11th, while Jesse Sergent came home fifth. The cycling team were quietly confident about Sergent's chances in the men's field, but he finished 52 seconds behind Englishman Alex Dowsett and 38 seconds off bronze.
Silver on the greens
With his final bowl, it looked like Kiwi skip Mark Noble had helped to haul his side back into their goal medal match in the open triples B6/B7/B8 competition. New Zealand had recovered from a 7-1 deficit against South Africa and Noble's effort, in the penultimate end, drew them level. But the opposition skip then went on to outdo his counterpart and let the Kiwi trio to settle for silver. Elsewhere, Shannon McIlroy was knocked out in the semifinals of the singles and will now play for bronze.
Gymnast jumps onto podium
It's been a long time since David Phillips won this country's last Commonwealth Games gymnastics medal. Sixteen years, to be precise. But the man who took bronze on the floor in Kuala Lumpur has helped to break the Kiwi drought in the sport, guiding David Bishop to a surprise bronze on the floor in Glasgow. The University of Auckland student may have qualified seventh of eight for the final but he managed to pip Daniel Keatings of Scotland by only 0.017 points.

Semi set for Sticks
The New Zealand men's hockey the will play India for a spot in the gold medal match after both sides won their final group games. The Black Sticks were convincing in dispatching an out-of-sorts Malayia 6-1 to top their pool, while India beat South Africa 5-2 in a match that decided second spot in group B. The Kiwis will of course trot out the 'one game at a time' mantra ahead of the semifinal but the match everyone is waiting for will come one round later against Australia.
800m pair advance
New Zealand duo Nikki Hamblin and Angie Smit have both qualified for tomorrow's 800m final. With both semifinals run in pouring rain, Smit was the best of the New Zealanders with a time of 2:01.97 in the first semifinal to finish third.Hamblin, who won silver in the event four years ago, was third in the second semifinal in a slower time of 2:02.87. The 800m final will be raced at 7.45am tomorrow.
Kiwis squash Kiwis
A quirk of the squash doubles draw reduced the number of New Zealand competitors at the round-of-16 stage of the competition, with young pair Lance Beddoes and Paul Coll tipping over highly-experienced and highly-fancied opponents Martin Knight and Campbell Grayson. And the day it rather easily, too, winning 11-7, 11-10 in just 42 minutes. Beddoes and Coll now advance to the quarter-finals, to play an as-yet undetermined opponent.
