Globe-trotting Under-17 skipper Puketapu aims to play at Under-20 champs in Canada

Not many 16-year-olds can say they have been to two World Cups in the same year.

But that is almost the reality for Year 12 Epsom Girls' Grammar School student Martine Puketapu.

If all goes according to plan, the striker will be heading to Canada in August with the Junior Football Ferns for the Fifa Women's Under-20 World Cup. That follows on from February's Under-17 World Cup in Costa Rica with the Young Football Ferns, where she was captain. But it doesn't end there. Last month she was in Brazil for a two-match tour with the Junior Ferns in preparation for the August World Cup, and she was also in Japan gaining experience with the senior national side, the Football Ferns. She has already had a glittering junior football career since first lacing boots at the age of 6.

Puketapu's passport has taken a hammering, and not just this year. In 2012, she was in Azerbaijan, of all places, scoring for the Young Football Ferns against Brazil.

"I'm so privileged with all the travel, and I've been lucky, because it costs a lot, but the EGGS Foundation and the Hauraki Trust Board have supported me along the way," said Puketapu.

"On tour we are there for the football, but we still get the odd day to experience a different culture, which is often so different to us here in New Zealand."

Though the Junior Football Ferns lost both games to Brazil, 1-3 and 0-1, Puketapu says the experience was still beneficial.

"It was a really good preparation for us, because we got some more international matches against Brazil. That's really helpful going into a World Cup."

New Zealand had scoring opportunities but couldn't finish, and though they didn't end up playing at any of the World Cup venues being used now, they did get to soak up some of the World Cup fever that was gripping Brazil last month.

Now Puketapu is in the thick of training for the August World Cup. She fits in club football for Three Kings on Sundays and matches with the Junior Ferns against boys' teams on Thursday nights. Throw in schoolwork and she has a busy life.

"As a carded athlete, I have a life management lady, who is really helpful. It's hard and tiring, but I get through it," says Puketapu.

She is used to being one of the youngest girls in the team, having debuted at premier club level when she was just 12, but the recent Football Ferns trip to Japan gave her more experience with seasoned performers at the highest level, though she did not get any game time. But she is in no hurry to represent New Zealand at this stage.

"I'm hoping not too quickly. I guess when the time is right and I'm more developed as a player."

In the meantime, it's a case of 'have passport and boots, will travel'.

Though she has not played for her school side this season, Puketapu was hoping she would be allowed to line up for EGGS in their big home clash tonight with MAGS.
