British boxing's governing body intends to fight a Court of Appeal ruling ordering them to pay massive compensation to brain-damaged former boxer Michael Watson.
But the British Boxing Board of Control, in receivership since a 1999 High Court ruling, must wait to hear whether or not they will be granted leave to appeal to the House of Lords.
Law lords said Watson had until May 29 to raise any objections to the application to Britain's highest court.
The board lost an appeal in December against compensation of more than £1 million ($3.4 million) it had been ordered to pay Watson, who sustained his injuries in a middleweight world title bout against Chris Eubank in 1991.
The Court of Appeal ruled that the board was liable for Watson's injuries and had been in breach of its duty.
