Conditions are expected to play a major part in the National Bowls Championships starting in Wellington today.
More than 1500 bowlers from throughout the country have gathered for the 13 day event covering 30 clubs in the Wellington region.
Defending singles champion Sharon Sims says each green may be different but the amount of wind is also a real variable.
She says if the greens are not too quick, you can get away with a bit of breeze, whereas breeze on a quick green provides a tough challenge.
Sims is aware of some key competition for her title, namely Jo Edwards and Val Smith.
She has entered the singles, pairs and fours events, but is desperate to defend her singles title over everything else.
The men's pairs and women's singles kick off the event.
