Athletics: Sprinter's health rules him out of Olympics

Struggling Australian sprinter Matt Shirvington yesterday ruled himself out of selection for the Olympics because of health problems.

The five-time national champion ran out of time at the weekend to qualify for a berth in the individual 100m in Athens, but could have still been picked in the 4x100m relay squad if Australia retain their position in the world's top 16.

He has had complications following glandular fever and has not been able to train or compete.

Shirvington will take an immediate break from training on the back of medical advice.

The Australian Olympic athletics team is to be announced today or tomorrow.
