Young Wairarapa tennis hopeful Marcus Daniell is continuing a blazing run of form, taking out his second consecutive $2000 ORIX money tournament in Wellington.
The win, an exciting three-hour epic, takes Daniell another step closer to the exclusive Slovakian training camp in Bratislava he trained at last year and his dreams of sponsorship.
The win comes on the back of Daniell's decisive victory over Jackson Bodle at the fourth ORIX tournament in Hamilton on Monday.
In his most recent win, Daniell beat former Davis Cup player and 1993 Wimbledon junior doubles champ Steven Downs in a three-set epic in the fifth ORIX NZMT fixture.
The match was played in windy conditions at Wellington's Renouf Tennis Centre with Daniell prevailing over his more experienced opponent 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
"It could have been over 6-2, 6-4. I was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set and he put a lob up. I saw the ball going over and I thought it was definitely going long but the wind drew it down and it came in. I was on my way to go up and shake his hand!"
Downs played a couple of great points to consolidate the windfall and went on to take the second in a tiebreak.
"Everything I win from these tournaments goes into the Slovakian fund it's like work".
Daniell is confident today as he enters the sixth ORIX money tournament, held again at the Renouf Centre. "I've played three matches in this tournament, the first set of the first match I didn't play very well but I still won. Since then I've been playing well. Winning in Hamilton gave me confidence. If I play my best tennis I should be able to beat the majority of these guys".
The last round of the eight-tournament ORIX fixture will be held in Christchurch, on grass at Hagley Park.
