Women killed in head-on collision named

Police have released the names of two women who were killed in a head-on collision in New Plymouth yesterday.

They were Rachel Constance Smith, 86, from Waitara and Pamela Mary Smith, 69 of Waitara. Police said the women were not related.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Devon Rd after they were contacted by a member of the public about 1.45pm yesterday.

First aid was given to the two female drivers, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both were the sole occupants of their vehicles, and their deaths had been referred to the coroner.

Police said an investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing.
