Whangarei driver hides in wardrobe

Whangarei police found a motorist hiding in a wardrobe after he sped away from a roadside patrol.

Sergeant Peter Toms said a police officer had been talking to a motorist in Whangarei on Friday when another motorist sped by.

The officer signalled the motorist to stop but he kept going. Police followed the 24-year-old and found him hiding in a wardrobe at his nearby home.

He was charged with drink-driving and failing to stop for police and will appear in the Whangarei District Court on Thursday.
