Westport is on the brink of losing its only direct air link to the capital, with flights to Wellington set to be axed by May 1 unless urgent financial support is secured.
Regional carrier Originair stepped in to maintain the route after Sounds Air withdrew from the Westport to Wellingtonservice in 2024.
Now, less than a year later, the future of the air connection is again in doubt.
In a statement, Originair pointed to the familiar challenge for regional aviation – a small market combined with rising operating costs.
“As a result of the ongoing Middle East conflict the recent staggering increase in the cost of Jet A1 fuel used on these services has further eroded the viability of the route.”

“In many countries where air services are deemed essential for isolated communities, these routes are supported by central government or major users of the service.”
Originair confirmed it had sought local backing, with an application before the Government’s Kanoa Regional Investment Fund under the Regional Airline Support Package.
However, the response had been discouraging.
“Advice on support from these parties to date has not been positive,” the company said.
“The airline’s shareholders are not able to justify continuing to support the route if the beneficiaries of the service are not prepared to assist.”

If support is not confirmed by March 27, the airline will be forced to draw a clear line in the sand.
