Wellington police station evacuated

Wellington's central police station was evacuated for three hours last night after a package brought into the building by two officers was found to contain explosives.

Forty staff and eight prisoners were evacuated about 6pm while the Army bomb disposal unit dealt with the package.

Police had been called to a Ngaio address by a landlord who had found the package in his rental property.

Its contents were revealed when the box was opened at the station.
