Wairarapa United were left scratching their heads as to how it all went wrong after they blew a two-goal advantage against Waterside Karori in a Wellington premier division soccer match in Masterton on Saturday.
Leading 2-0 early in the second half, the home side then imploded to gift the visitors three
soft goals in 30 minutes.
The carnage began after both captain Carl Shailer and player/coach Peter Rabo succumbed to injuries and were forced to sit the match out from the bench.
"Losing them mucked up our composure and shape a bit, but at the end of the day when you're 2-0 up you should never lose," team spokesman Phil Keinzley said.
"What's particularly disappointing is that all three of their goals were really from defensive errors and up until this point we'd been so good.
"But they were a lot keener in the last 20 minutes than we were and a lot more committed on the ball so we need to learn from that."
Wairarapa looked the goods for the two-thirds of the match with youngster Anton Ross latching onto a Rabo ball in the 10th minute to give his side the perfect start.
Shortly after the break substitute Lai Gatuarua found the back of the net to double the advantage.
However, with the loss of both Shailer and Rabo the side's composure began to slide as possession swung in favour of the visitors.
A missed tackle started the rot, with Karori making no mistake of a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Tony Jamieson and they equalised shortly after when Wairarapa turned over possession from their own corner and failed to defend the counter-attack.
With the match in the balance the visitors then took a throw-in long into the box where some shoddy defending allowed the ball to be headed home for the winner.
"The boys are gutted, they know they let themselves down and know if they'd won the game they could be leading the table," Keinzley said.
"It's a good lesson for the side to learn, they're a young team and the season's got a long way to go yet."
Standouts for the home side were Czech import and man-of-the-match Mireck Tvaroh, while Ross again proved he is capable at this level.
Rabo was also unlucky to not find the back of the net after forcing the opposing goalkeeper to pull out two spectacular saves.
The loss leaves Wairarapa sitting in fifth spot on the league table on goal difference but within one win of Petone at the top, with former leaders Island Bay crashing to defeat against Upper Hutt.
