Two 15-year-old boys from Taihape have been arrested after a high-speed car chase between Palmerston North and Horowhenua.
Police allege the driver reached speeds of 180km/h. He has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, careless use of a vehicle and dangerous driving.
The pursuit began after reportsof the theft of a Subaru from a shed on Main Trunk Line, Palmerston North.
A police patrol spotted the car heading south from Palmerston North. Horowhenua police picked up the chase as it entered Shannon and continued south towards Levin.
Senior sergeant Willie Roy of Levin police said when the stolen vehicle entered a built-up area his staff backed away from the chase.
The car continued at speed through Levin hitting one car as it went through a roundabout.
Police say it ran a red light as it turned north onto State Highway 1, clipping another vehicle, and nearly hitting a woman pushing a pram on a crossing.
Police got ahead of the Subaru as it travelled north on State Highway 1 and laid down spikes.
The chase continued north of Foxton where the car was boxed in and brought to a halt with both front tyres deflated.
Mr Roy said the accused helping police with their enquiries into other stolen vehicles.
