Firefighters freed two people from a vehicle this afternoon after it rolled down a bank on State Highway 29 in the Lower Kaimais.

The vehicle, a Ford SUV towing a caravan, appeared to have toppled down a bank and ended up on its roof.

Emergency services were called at midday to the crash site, between Omanawa Rd and Ruahihi Rd. Firefighters extracted the occupants from the SUV.

Police Sergeant Adrian Tukaki said the male driver was not injured, but a woman aged in her 50s was taken to hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

Traffic heading towards Tauranga was reduced to crawling bumper-to-bumper as police diverted vehicles around a fire engine and ambulance at the scene. Traffic heading away from Tauranga flowed normally.

Police were unable to say whether the victims were locals or holidaymakers from outside the region.
