Two people were killed and another seriously injured when the car they were in crashed into a parked vehicle in Kaiapoi, near Christchurch, early today.
Inspector Bob Palmer, of the Police Southern Communications Centre, said today that the male driver of the car and a woman, who was a rear seat passenger, died in the crash about 2.10am.
A male front seat passenger was also seriously injured in the crash.
"It was a small, older-style car that had been hotted up and it would appear speed was a factor in the crash."
The crash occurred on a street in the town of Kaiapoi, 19km north of Christchurch, Mr Palmer said.
However he said an investigation into the crash was continuing.
Police are yet to release the victims' names.
