Two women are dead after a crash in Te Anau last night.
Police were called to the crash near Cascade Creek on the Te Anau Milford Highway in Fiordland at 5.20pm yesterday.
Both women were trapped in the car after the accident. One woman died at the scene while the second was transported to hospital by helicopter.
Both were cut from the crashed vehicle, a Southern Fire Service spokesman said.
Two fire engines from Te Anau, police and St John were at the crash site.
A Southern district police spokesman said last night that he was unsure what had caused the crash, or what the vehicle had crashed in to.
"Radio and phone reception isn't very good in that area so details are scarce at the moment," he said.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
A person died further south on the highway, between Te Anau and Mossburn, on Wednesday morning after their car rolled and hit a power pole.
