Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Union chairman David Cameron is standing down from the job.
Pressures of work and a feeling that after nine years on the WBRFU board it's time for a change will see Cameron not only give up the chairmanship but also his board position at the union's annual meeting early
next month.
Cameron has been board chairman for the last three years and has been encouraged with the progress the sport has made locally in that time.
Especially at inter-provincial level where Wairarapa-Bush are currently the holders of the inaugural Heartland championship title after taking out the NPC third division competition the previous year.
Cameron says the success of the premier side has lifted the profile of Wairarapa-Bush rugby, not only within the local region but all over the country .
And the next challenge for the WBFRU was to ensure that the progress made in recent times laid the platform for further successes.
"We have to keep moving forward, we can't dwell on what has happened over the past few months," he said. "It's a hard act to follow and we can't afford to sit on our laurels."
Administratively, Cameron says moving the WBRFU head office to Memorial Park had been a major plus as was the union structure which had a council of clubs basically in charge of what happened at club level.
"I won't say there hasn't been the odd hiccup there, but it's working well now and will only get better," he said.
At the same time however Cameron agrees some of the clubs themselves have been struggling to remain viable and that the union needed to take their share of responsibility in that regard.
"I think it's fair to say that as a union we have to lift our game at club level, we still need to improve the health of the game there," he said.
Cameron believes it vital too that Wairarapa-Bush keep building their coaching base, something which had got stronger over the past few seasons.
"We now have a good number of quality coaches coming through the system, and that's a very positive sign,' he said. " You need to be strong in that area if you want to compete well at the top levels."
Of the current WBRFU board only two ? Bryan Weatherstone and Charlie Meyer ? are guaranteed to be part of that organisation going into the 2007 season, as their positions are not up for re-election. Sitting members Lionel King and Richard Dahlberg have been joined by newcomer Graeme Reisima in the battle for the remaining two vacancies on the board, with the other two positions being filled by the chairman and deputy chairman of the council of clubs.
The latter are currently held by John Percy and Richard Dahlberg respectively, but they won't be serving in that capacity again as Percy is to become union vice-president and Dahlberg has been nominated by his club, Pioneer. as a straight board member, but not as their delegate on the council of clubs.
